Go Bold with RED Milk Paint!!

I've been sooooo busy. I finally got into a space at a store!

But first.....
I Just completed another "Go Bold" Milk Paint Dresser!!!
Can you say,  "RED".   OMG.  This milk paint, from the Real Milk Paint co. , has the most
brilliant red! It's gorgeous! The tung-oil finish just makes it so beautiful.

I wasn't about to lug this in the house to stage it, only to lug it back out the next morning to transport it to the store! So you will just have to use you imagination, forgive my trashed garage floor, and shop-vac in the background!

I painted the wooden knobs 'cuz I didn't have enough of the crystal!  I painted the appliques milk paint red and then dry-brushed w/CeCe's white.
I found this cool fabric to line the drawers!

Beachy Vibe Little Maple Buffet

I found this piece of, er, um,,,,,piece at a garage sale around the corner.
It was a sad, sad little water damaged buffet. But the nice thing
about wood is that it's hardy and forgiving!

Take a gander at this solid maple beaut...

Yes,,,that thing lying in there is the bottom shelf. The top looked just as bad as the rest of it.
They were asking $30...I offered 20 bucks.  The two girls nearly threw it at me.
Should have offered 5. Oh well.

I had a bit of left over milk paint in turquoise. I brush a bit here and there on top and then painted the whole thing with CeCe Caldwells White.

Another Gem Colored Milk Paint Dresser!

I just cant get enough of the stunning colors from the Real Milk Paint Co. !
Last dresser re-do it was a bold cobalt/ultra-marine blue.  This time Im going
TURQUOISE.
But first, let me tell you about this score on this dresser.

Not too bad.  It was obviously a well made piece. Nice type of mahogany. It was in pretty good shape.
The gentleman I bought it from (CL) was one of those storage war people.  Although, he
said he got this from his uncle who had passed.  He wanted 85 for it. We agreed on $60.
Had no idea what a score I was about to discover.

I have never seen handles like this before. I took a quick glance at them and thought
they were unique. Even the escutcheons were beautiful. Of course he didnt have the key.
Does anyone ever have the key????

Anyway, got the beauty home and started my work. The handles were nice and hefty. Got out the
Brasso and started to see how they would shine up.
Hello!!!! Holy-Solid-Cast-Brass Batman!
Yes. Solid. No plating. I know you know how much solid brass handles cost.
10 handles and 5 escutcheons.  You do the math.....uh-huh......Scoresville!

Heres hubs shining the booty up on the polisher.

Want to see what they look like on the finished piece??
Like gold jewelry on a gorgeous gown....check out my Turquoise Baby!!!

I just love this color! I had planned on selling this one. But after seeing how great this color turned
out, and of course this awesome hardware, I think Im keeping this guy.

So I actually used the one marked cobalt blue. However, the rep said that they had an error listing the names, as I told him this color was no where near cobalt. So I really dont know what color this is. The one labeled turquoise is more of a teal. The company was nice enough and sent me two other colors (Peacock and Black) and a jar of their burnishing paste.  Its a matte acrylic topcoat. Sort of like using wax on top of chalk paint.

This totally looks like Bo-bo the clowns dresser.
After layering on the milk paint.
Once I start sanding, the other colors
will peek thru.

This shows how I layered on two other colors of chalk paint before painting over the whole
thing with the milk paint.  Milk paint works best on completely bare wood. It went over the chalk paint with no problems.

It was a paint-fest!!   I have serious issues.  While doing the dresser, I also tried out my milk paint on the new campaign dresser I picked up. Yes..a Baker Campaign dresser. For the paltry sum of $15.00!!! Dont Hate!    I will talk about that painting fiasco in my next post.....Sheesh....

To bring out the depth in the color, I used a dark wax over all of the paint.
I hate waxing. It took quite awhile and I couldnt move the next morning.

For the wood top. I sanded and used a mixture of stains.
All the wood got coated with Tung Oil that I got from Real Milk Paint Co.
You can read about the oil on my last post on the bold blue dresser.

And here is a pic of it inside my living room.
I just kind of threw it in there,,,,havent really had a chance to decorate around it.
I think its time to repaint the room. Im so not looking forward to that.
Its not a bad color, im just tired of it.

One last look at the pretty jewelry!!

VINTAGE KEYS disquising a thermostat

Do you see my thermostat? Would you if I had not mentioned it? I disguised it by working it into the
wall art. I used similar shapes to help your eye pass right by the utility. You can also put a fancy
frame around the thermostat to help incorporate it but hanging things to close and right over top of it
can cause it not to read the rooms temperature right. I know cause I did it before.

I used fancy little frames I picked up at yard sales and second hand stores. They have no glass
and I painted them white. I cut heavy brown cardboard to fit inside the frames, and hot glued the
keys to the cardboard.

I usually have some painted frames listed for sale if you are local and wanting to do this yourself.

ANGEL WINGS dresser makeover

My love of wood working came quite naturally.

I taught myself how to paint, I developed the confidence and learned over time how to use power
tools. I was gifted with a creative never ending mind and the eye to see wonderful and beautiful
shapes and ideas. It has taken countless years to put it all together to create the amazing things I write
 about in this blog.

I started this project as I usually do, picking a piece I would like to work with
but not knowing where it is going when I start.
I get familiar with the piece while doing repairs, and think about how it can
look unique and amazing but still fit into someones lifestyle today.

These beautiful angel wings I added are my custom graphic transfer process.
The image I used was found on line.

Adding these chair legs to this boxy piece of furniture was NOT simple or easy!

Were Friends and I Have an E mail to Prove It

This is just a quick note to pass along a cool thing that happened to me this morning. Social media of all sorts is a very interesting phenomena. Especially a monster like Facebook. I was just talking to someone the other day and saying that things are kind of odd these days because I used to live a couple of separate lives, at least two of them. There was my work, and then there was my home. And though one supported the other, those two things never really crossed paths all that often. I never subversively hid anything about my home life from my coworkers, and if they asked what I had going on the coming weekend I told them what was up. I guess I just never felt the need to put myself all out there. Social media always seems to ballance the line between bragging and whining. I try to walk the tightrope as best as anybody, but I know I slip from time to time.

Then a little over a year ago I decided to but the bullet and join Facebook, mostly to stay connected with family, and to try and reconnect with some old friends Id lost touch with along the way. The first time I had a coworker find me and request my friendship I really had to think about it. In fact I spent a couple days mulling it over before actually deciding to accept the friendship. Now I live a fully integrated life, I am Facebook friends with many people I work with and I still have to think about it sometimes when someone starts a conversation using something they read about me as a friend.

This morning however Facebook took a turn for me into the Twilight Zone, as I received this in my e-mail in-box

Only in a world blessed with Facebook would I get an e-mail where Saint Roy has confirmed our "friendship" Maybe hell let me stay in his spare bedroom if Im ever down his way, Im sure its only a matter of time before he invites me as a guest on his show.

Im positive if anything even remotely reaching a real conversation happened between me and Mr. Underhill, not only would I be a stammering idiot, but I would probably have to clean out my drawers.

I love seeing Roy, I love reading his books, watching him work on his TV show. I love how when I was budding as a woodworker and obsessed with the Normite way of life, how I would get to watch his show follow after and find there was a different way of doing things and that way was totally an accessible thing. I credit Roy with the early exposure that made it feel OK when I decided to start exploring an unplugged workshop and for continuing to be a source of both education and inspiration.

Im not sure theres enough of any substance in this world that could delude me enough to consider this e-mail to be anything more than what it is. A Facebook thing. But setting all that aside for just a second, it is still a pretty cool thing to receive on a snowy Saturday morning.

Thank You Roy! Cheers!

Wood Shed Plans 4 Critical Factors You Must Know Before Picking Your Wood Shed Designs!

Wood Shed Plans

Wood Shed Plans

Choosing the right kind of wood shed plans can prove quite a challenge. There are a number of factors which need to be taken into consideration beforehand to ensure that you select the right sort of wood shed plans for your specific needs. Below we offer some tips that you may find useful in determining which of the many wood shed designs available is going to be right for you.

Tip 1 - What Will You Be Using Your Wood Shed For?

Will you be using your shed for the storage of garden equipment? Will you be using your shed to provide you with a space to work? If you intend to use yours as a workspace then you should ensure that you choose plans where there is plenty of space inside to allow freedom of movement for you. However, if you intend to use your shed for storage purposes only again make sure that it is large enough that you have easy access to everything stored in it.

Tip 2 - Where Should You Locate The Shed?

Most people like to put their sheds in a position away from the house because then it wont detract from the look of their garden. However, you need to make sure that the area of ground it is going to be located on is large enough to accommodate the size of the shed chosen. Also, you need to make sure that the land is level, if it isnt then you will need to spend time making sure that it is.

Another thing you need to think about when deciding on the location of where the wood shed is to be situated is what you intend to use it for. If it is purely to be used as a storage space then you are not limited to where you put it. However, if you are going to be using yours as an office or workspace then you need to make sure that you locate it close to the things that you need such as power. This may well mean you locating the shed close to your home or garage to run an electrical supply to it easily.

Tip 3 - What Facilities Should It Have?

When looking at various types of wood shed plans to determine which one is best for you, again you will need to take into consideration how it is going to be used. You will need a shed with large doors on it should you be using yours to store large garden equipment such as a riding mower, as this will allow you to move it in and out easily. Whereas if the shed is going to be used as a workspace look for those wood shed designs that have some windows in them to allow plenty of natural light to come inside.

Tip 4 - Do You Need Planning Permission?

When it comes to deciding which of the many wood shed plans you are going to use, you need to think about whether or not you need to get planning permission to erect yours. If you are going to go with one of the large wood shed designs, say that measures over 100 sq ft, then you may need to speak with your local authority first to determine if planning permission is required or not. If you erect a shed of this size or larger without getting the relevant permissions to erect it you may well find yourself being asked to take it down.

Coffee cup lid

Hi Everyone,

If youre like me and you generate a lot of small scrap lumber, youre probably always wondering what to do with it all. One thing that you can make and that is useful are coffee cup lids. These are small, circles of wood that have a small knob on top that you can put on top of hot cups of coffee and they will help to get your coffee warm for a lot longer than just living the top of the cup uncovered. In this blog posting Im going to describe how to make them.

I work with local hardwoods which means I often have a lot of oak, hickory, maple, and birch scrap in the shop and these pieces are perfect for small things like the coffee cup lid in the center of the photograph. This particular lid is made from hickory:

To begin with youll need a piece of wood at least 3 1/2" wide. Mark off a square and then find the center by connecting the opposite corners with a straight line. Then mark off a circle with a compass. In the photo the wood is about 4" wide and the circle is approximately 3 1/2" in diameter:

This first blank is hickory:

This blank is maple. Maple is my favorite turning wood. It cuts cleanly and smoothly:

The next step is to drill a hold in the center of the circle on the drill press with a Forstner bit (see my discussion about this on my previous posting about the black walnut vase). Be sure and clamp the wood down with a clamp before drilling:

After youve drilled the hole, roughly cut out the circles. You dont have to cut these exactly into circles but you do have to cut off the corners:

In this photo Ive mounted the blank on the lathe and have begun truing up the edge. Ive begun cutting from the face of the blank towards the center of the edge. This is a much easier way of truing up the blank without damaging the surface of the wood:

Next Ive trued up the face and made it flat. Even though it looks flat in the photograph, its not:

Now Ive roughed out the knob in the center. I like to cut a depression underneath and just off to the side of the knob so my fingers will fit around and under the knob:

This photo shows the blank from the side. Notice that the surface of the blank has been cut away and the knob now stands up and away from the surface. Ive also cut into the sides of the knob so my fingers will fit under it:

Here is the top of the blank. Ive added a little detail to it and Ive also sculpted the knob a little:

Next, Im going to cut a lip on the underside of the blank. This will help the top to stay on the coffee cup (see photo below):

This is the finished top on the lathe with a little bit of linseed oil on it:

And here it is on the cup. Notice that it fits into the cup:

Here is the underside of the lid showing the lip. This lip is 3 1/4" in diameter and should fit most American coffee mugs:

As its getting cold and Im beginning to freeze up again, Im going to defer making the hickory lid until tomorrow. Ill follow the same set of steps that Ive shown here. Im going to make that lid a little smaller in case my cousin has smaller coffee mugs than I do.

You can make this lid any diameter you wish. Just be sure and measure and calculate the average inside diameter of your coffee cups before you begin. If you have cups that are larger than that, then you have a great excuse to go back out to your wood shop and make another one!

Have fun,
VW
